Captain

Helmsman

The helmsman is the deputy to the captain and takes on many practical duties on the bridge and during ship operations.

  • Responsible for watchkeeping and monitoring the planned route.
  • Assists the captain with navigation and steering.
  • Checks the condition of the cargo and ensures safe stowage.
  • Performs administrative tasks such as maintaining logbooks.

Full sailor

The Full sailor is an experienced crew member who leads and organizes the work on deck.

Responsibilities:
• Coordinates the work of the deck crew.
• Responsible for the maintenance and care of deck equipment, ropes, bollards, and anchors.
• Supervises and directs loading and unloading operations.
• Assists with docking, undocking, and lock maneuvers.
• Ensures compliance with safety regulations on deck.

Sailor

A Sailor is a trained crew member who performs a wide range of tasks on the vessel.

Responsibilities:
• Performs maintenance work such as cleaning, painting, and minor repairs.
• Operates mechanical devices and equipment, such as anchor winches or cranes.
• Assists with docking, undocking, and lock maneuvers.
• Helps secure and monitor the cargo.
• Performs tasks related to safety and emergency management, such as operating lifesaving equipment.

Light sailor

An Light sailor is a crew member with less experience who performs basic tasks under guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports the deck crew with everyday tasks such as cleaning and maintenance.
  • Assists with cargo securing and handling equipment.
  • Learns the basics of navigation and other onboard operations.
  • Assists with simple maneuvers and works under the supervision of the boatswain or able seaman.

Deckhand

A deckhand is an assistant, often without formal training, who performs simple tasks on the vessel.

  • Helps maintain the deck and equipment.
  • Performs general support tasks such as stowing equipment or keeping the vessel clean.
  • Assists with loading and unloading under supervision.
  • Helps with maneuvers, e.g., by handling ropes or fenders.
